UAE Doctors Save Child’s Leg From Amputation Through Advanced Reconstruction Surgery, Al Zahra Hospital, Dubai Restores Mobility for Child Born with Rare Congenital Limb Condition
Dubai: In a powerful example of the UAE’s rapidly advancing healthcare sector, doctors at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai have successfully saved the leg of a seven-year-old boy who was previously told by several medical institutions that amputation was his only option.
Born with a rare congenital condition involving the absence of the tibia bone in his right leg, Adam faced severe mobility challenges from birth. The condition, considered extremely uncommon, affected the stability and development of his leg and ankle, leaving his family searching for answers for years.
According to the family, multiple consultations with specialists outside and within the country pointed toward amputation as the only possible treatment. The repeated diagnoses placed immense emotional strain on the parents, who feared for their son’s future and quality of life.
Hope emerged when the case was referred to Dr. Zaid Al Obaidi at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai. Rather than opting for amputation, Dr. Al Obaidi developed a complex limb reconstruction and preservation plan aimed at saving the child’s leg.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Al Obaidi explained that Adam underwent several highly specialized surgeries over the course of his treatment. The procedures included transferring the fibula bone to replace the missing tibia, alongside reconstructive surgery to stabilize and rebuild the ankle joint, which had not naturally developed at birth.

The treatment journey also involved advanced limb-lengthening procedures designed to support balanced growth and improve long-term mobility as Adam continues to grow.
Today, after years of surgeries, rehabilitation, and follow-up care, Adam is able to walk, run, and play like any other child his age — a transformation his family once believed was impossible.
Adam’s mother described the outcome as “life-changing,” encouraging families facing difficult medical decisions to seek multiple expert opinions before considering irreversible procedures. She also praised the level of medical expertise now available in the UAE.
Dr. Al Obaidi noted that many complex and challenging conditions can now be treated successfully within the country, highlighting the UAE’s growing reputation as a regional hub for advanced healthcare and specialized surgical expertise aligned with international standards.
