LeBron James makes NBA history once again with 40,000th career point
Los Angeles Lakers star, LeBron James, set a new National Basketball Association (NBA) record by becoming the first player in the organisation’s history to reach 40,000 career points, The US Sun reported.
During their game against the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, James, 39, entered the court with only nine points short of hitting the record.
He ultimately reached the mark in the second quarter with the Lakers up 37-32, after scoring five points in the first.
As the Lakers forward left the court, the entire arena gave him a standing ovation, including his family.
James’ 40,000th bucket was followed by a heartfelt moment between him and Nuggets star Nikola Jokic as he hugged and congratulated the Lakers star.
James became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in February 2023, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387, which the NBA Hall of Famer had held since 1984.
Earlier this week, James told reporters that reaching the 40,000 mark would “of course” mean something to him.
“For me to be in this position at this point in time in my career I think is pretty cool,” he admitted. “Does it sit at the top of things I’ve done in my career? No. Does it mean something? Of course. Absolutely. Why wouldn’t it?”
Hall of Famer Robert Parish’s record of 1,611 appearances could be the next record James could break with only 137 remaining.
He is also one season away from tying Vince Carter’s record of 22 played.
Furthermore, despite James’ milestone, the Nuggets won 124-114.
