Dubai Sets Bold Sustainability Vision with ‘Blue and Green Spaces Roadmap 2030
Dubai is accelerating its journey toward sustainable urban living with the launch of the “Blue and Green Spaces Roadmap 2030”, a comprehensive strategic vision unveiled by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, at the World Governments Summit 2026 (WGS 2026).
The roadmap, introduced by the Dubai Municipality, marks a major milestone in the emirate’s long-term effort to embed nature at the heart of city planning. With an estimated investment exceeding AED 4 billion, the initiative aims to redefine how residents, visitors, and tourists interact with Dubai’s urban environment, positioning nature as a vital element of infrastructure and human wellbeing.

A New Vision for Urban Ecosystems
The Blue and Green Spaces Roadmap 2030 reflects Dubai’s ambition to lead globally in quality of life, sustainability, and human-centred governance models for future cities. It goes beyond traditional urban development by integrating public parks, waterfronts, beaches, agricultural and conservation areas, advanced treatment systems, and recreational facilities into a cohesive and resilient environment that serves people and communities.
Sheikh Mohammed, accompanied by senior leaders including Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, reviewed the initiative at WGS 2026, which has become a key global platform for sharing forward-thinking government policies.
Nature as Urban Infrastructure
By 2030, the roadmap will significantly enhance daily life in Dubai by transforming natural elements into essential urban assets. Key targets include:
- Planting approximately 1.5 million trees over five years, boosting urban greenery and air quality.
- Implementing over 45 landscaping and beautification projects across communities.
- Adding 120 new parks spanning nearly 3 million square metres, enriching public spaces for all ages.
- Creating 200 sports and recreational areas, seamlessly connected within green networks to encourage active lifestyles.
These efforts are closely aligned with Dubai’s broader planning vision, including the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which also emphasises doubling green and recreational spaces and ensuring that nature plays an integral role in future urban development.
Revitalised Coastlines and Beachfronts
The roadmap reimagines Dubai’s coastlines, positioning them as dynamic urban assets rather than mere scenic backdrops. More than 15 major coastal development projects are planned, including the introduction of three new beach destinations annually. These developments are set to enhance public access to waterfronts and promote outdoor living.
Under the plan, beach facilities and services will see a 400 % increase, while public beach capacity is expected to grow by 150 %. Beachfront walking, jogging, and cycling tracks will also expand by nearly 285 %, creating vibrant spaces for community activities and wellness.
Global Leadership in Urban Sustainability
Dubai Municipality emphasises that the roadmap not only upgrades local urban environments but also sets a global benchmark for sustainable city design and management. The initiative aims to share integrated urban planning approaches with cities worldwide, strengthening Dubai’s position as a leader in shaping future cities that are resilient, inclusive, and designed for human happiness.
The Blue and Green Spaces Roadmap 2030 is a bold step toward a greener, healthier, and more liveable Dubai—one where nature and city life grow in harmony, enhancing the wellbeing of residents and the experiences of visitors for years to come.
