SAU Tandojam Secures PKR 100 Million for Mango Research and Export Enhancement Projects
Sindh: Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tandojam has successfully secured funding worth PKR 100 million from the Export Development Fund (EDF) to establish a Mango Disease and Research Center, a Clean Mango Nursery, and a Mango Drying Center. These initiatives aim to boost mango exports through value addition and improved quality control.
The funding was awarded to three key projects led by SAU faculty members. Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Khaskheli from the Department of Plant Pathology received support for establishing a Disease Diagnostic and Research Center. Dr. Aasia Akbar Panhwar from the Institute of Food Sciences and Technology secured funds for a Mango Drying Unit, while Dr. Noor-un-Nisa Memon from the Department of Horticulture obtained funding for a Clean Mango Nursery.

To highlight the significance of these projects, an awareness seminar titled “Role of Export Development Fund (EDF) and SAU Collaborative Projects” was held at the University Senate Hall on Wednesday.
Speaking at the event, Vice Chancellor Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal underscored the immense investment potential in Pakistan’s agricultural sector. He emphasized the need for collaboration between academia, industry, and funding institutions to promote agricultural exports and value-added products. “With EDF’s support, SAU is introducing innovations in mango quality improvement, disease control, and value addition. These initiatives will strengthen Pakistan’s position in global markets and create new economic opportunities for farmers and agro-businesses,” he said.

EDF Deputy Director Abdul Qayoom revealed that while investments are being made to boost exports, only 2% of the allocated funds for agricultural projects have been utilized so far. He also highlighted the establishment of 27 centers across the country to train skilled professionals, who will contribute to the national industry.

Qayoom pointed out a significant gap in Pakistan’s agricultural exports, citing the example of chilli. Despite having Asia’s largest chilli market in Sindh, Pakistan has not exported a single consignment to China, which imports chilli worth $7 billion annually, due to excessive Aflatoxin contamination.
Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Khaskheli explained that the Disease Diagnostic Center will help detect infections in nurseries and fruits, improving the exportability of agricultural commodities. Meanwhile, Dr. Noor-un-Nisa Memon stressed the need for commercial mango export projects in Sindh, similar to those in Multan, and urged experts to design innovative proposals to attract funding.

Dr. Aasia Akbar Panhwar highlighted the benefits of the Mango Drying Unit, which will ensure year-round availability of dried mangoes and significantly enhance the export potential of Sindh’s mango industry.

These projects mark a significant step toward strengthening Pakistan’s agricultural exports and providing new opportunities for farmers and businesses in the sector.
