New Zealand Triumphs Over South Africa to Win ICC Women’s T20 World Cup
Dubai: New Zealand claimed the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title after defeating South Africa by 32 runs in a thrilling final at Dubai International Stadium. The Black Caps delivered a strong performance both with the bat and ball to secure the victory, setting a competitive target of 159, which proved too much for the Proteas.
Opting to bowl first, South Africa saw mixed results from their bowlers, with Ayabonga Khaka, Chloe Tryon, and Nadine de Klerk each picking up a wicket. Nonkululeko Mlaba impressed, claiming two scalps. However, New Zealand’s batting depth came through, with standout performances from Amelia Kerr, who top-scored with 43 runs, and Brooke Halliday, whose vital 38 off 28 balls anchored the innings. Suzie Bates contributed 32 runs, helping the team post a total of 158/5.
In response, South Africa’s chase began positively with captain Laura Wolvaardt leading from the front. She top-scored with 33 runs off 27 balls, hitting five boundaries. However, her dismissal triggered a collapse in the middle order, with Tazmin Brits (17) being the next highest scorer. The Proteas lost wickets at regular intervals, as key players like Marizanne Kapp (8), Nadine de Klerk (6), and Chloe Tryon (14) were unable to build momentum.
New Zealand’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout, restricting South Africa to 126/9 in their 20 overs. Nonkululeko Mlaba (4) and Ayabonga Khaka (4) remained unbeaten at the end, but it was not enough to prevent New Zealand from lifting the trophy.
New Zealand’s all-round performance earned them a well-deserved victory and the title of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup champions.
